Miniature painting.

This is amazing! It's so delicate and beautiful. It must have taken a lot of patience to paint.

I think its a more refined, time consuming and aesthetically pleasing version of Ben Wilson's work, who paints onto old chewing gum on the streets.

Each piece of work is painting onto something and breathing new life into it. Ben Wilson's work is almost as if he is creating little embellishments on the road, waiting for someone to discover it!

Nature

As a possible idea we looked into the miniatures that can be found in nature. We were thinking that perhaps patterns and textures (as can be seen above) could be focused on as a subject matter for the project. The idea of drawing attention to the micro detail and structures that can be found in nature.

I had done some photography and etchings previously where I was looking at the detail and structure of the veins in leaves; so thought this could relate to the idea and be a possible direction that we could take as a group.

Things to be thinking about....

Some thoughts that we came away with after our first tutorial:

- Why are we so drawn to miniature?

- Do miniatures mesmerize us?

- Do we want to nurture and protect small things? are they more precious to us?

- Is it like creating a magical world?

- What is the purpose of it?

- Is it to tell a narrative?

- Is it to amaze people?

- Is it to play around with the sense of scale and perspective?

- Is it to change peoples feelings/ atmosphere/ surroundings?

- Is it to draw attention to the small and insignificant?

Initial boards of inspiration

This board was done to explore the topic of ' The art of miniature' before the project was first properly introduced to us as a group. We found that there was a lot of sculptural elements to the topic of miniature and that it definitely requires an immense amount of skill and time to produce a successful outcome.

This board was done to explore the idea of pencil sculpture further. Could you use the pencil to create miniature sculptures and is there an element of narrative in miniature art?
